Bryan Dominguez, first-gen college student stories

Bryan Dominguez - Painting + Drawing Major and Undergraduate Advising Assistant

Soy producto de dos Mexicanos, nacido y criado en Chicago. Vine a estudiar Pintura + Dibujo para compartir mi cultura con los demás . Voy a ser artista y el mundo no está preparado. ¿Qué más quieres?

/

I am a product of two Mexicans, born and raised in Chicago. I came to study Painting + Drawing to share my culture with everyone. I will be an artist and the world is not ready. What else do you want?

‘Echale ganas mijo’ are the words I hear from my father. It will probably be the only words I will actually listen to, not because he told me to but because I want to. ‘Le voy a echar ganas’ to a path I want. To my ama, gracias por apoyarme todo el tiempo. To all of my siblings you'll be fine, you'll do great, todo a su propio paso.

‘¿Por qué te vas tan lejos?’ Those are the words I would hear from my family. I found it interesting how they would question it without thinking how they left their own country for a better life. Sometimes I feel like an invisible mirror to them. In some ways I am them, trying to have a better life by going into the unknown.

Strengths of being First-Gen

I can share untold story that family couldn’t share.

Challenges of being First-Gen

Finding a community and trying to be a better First Generation Student. I am a competitive person so I strive to be as best as I can be. It also motivates me to do better.
