Online Learning Resources
There may be some technologies being used to support online learning that are new to you. We are compiling help documentation to guide you through the use of these tools. Highlighted below are key steps to getting up and running with these technologies. Courses are offered in the evenings or on weekends. Some of our online classes are synchronous, meaning they meet live during a specific time of day, in Pacfic Time, on the video conferencing platform Zoom. Others are asynchronous, meaning they consist of pre-recorded lectures students can access at any point of the week. Some courses will be a combination of both.
The most common programs we will be using are:

Privacy & Use of Online Instruction Materials
Use of images, recordings or content taken from classes is restricted and may only be shared or posted on social media with the consent of the instructor and all class participants.
Zoom is video conferencing software that unifies HD video conferencing, mobility, and web meetings.Download and install Zoom if you haven't already.
- Access to a computer (laptop, desktop) or a mobile device (tablet/smartphone)
- Access to a webcam (most computers and mobile devices have built-in webcams)
- High speed internet access (Wi-Fi or 4G/5G)
- Zoom app (system requirements)

Join a Zoom Meeting
When you're invited to a Zoom meeting, you'll be provided with a link. If this is your first time using Zoom, you may need to install the Zoom client before you can participate.
Join via Invite Link
- If you receive an invitation link to a Zoom meeting, you can join the meeting just by clicking the link.
- If you have the Zoom client installed, your browser will ask before opening it.Before you join, you can choose if you want to join the meeting sharing your audio and video or not. You can change these while participating in the meeting as well.
Join via Zoom Client
- You'll be prompted to enter either a Meeting ID or Personal Link Name. Check your original invitation to see which you have, and enter it here.
- You can change how your name will be displayed in the meeting.
- The first checkbox will let you join a meeting without sharing audio from your microphone, and the second checkbox will let you join a meeting without sharing video from your webcam. Both of these can be adjusted while participating in a meeting as well.
- When you're ready, click the Join button and you'll be taken to the meeting.
Zoom Menu Bar
The Zoom menu bar appears at the bottom of the Zoom window once the meeting begins. If you don’t see the menu bar you are probably in full-screen mode, move your mouse slightly and the bar will appear.
With the Zoom Menu Bar you are able to do the following
- Mute/unmute your audio (not the audio of the other participants). You can also select your audio input here by clicking the up ^ arrow next to the microphone icon. This can allow you to switch from computer speaker to headphones, for example.
- Start/stop your video. You can also select your video input here by clicking the up ^ arrow next to the video camera icon.
- Invite more people to join (not applicable to students)
- View a list of participants
- Share your desktop (everything you have open) or select a specific application to share
- Send a message to one person (using private chat) or to all participants. **if a meeting is being recorded, I think the entire chat will be downloaded and even if it’s a “private message” I think it might get saved in the chat history
- Record the meeting (not applicable to students)
- Leave or end the video meeting
Switching Between Views (Share Screen and Video):
Switch to screen share by clicking “Share Screen” in the menu bar as shown: A window showing all possible options to share displays like below. Click on the item you want to display, which will be highlighted in green, then click “Share”:
To make sure you get the most out of every session, keep the following tips in mind:
- Find a quiet well-lit location. Ensure there is no background noise - fans, washing machines, loud music, etc.
- Ensure there is adequate lighting.
- Join a session a few minutes early to test your audio and video connections. Or join a “test meeting” to practice.
- Ensure you have the latest Zoom app downloaded (Click on Zoom. in the upper left of your computer's menu bar, and select "Check for Updates…”.
- Consider using a headset (or earbuds) instead of speakers and a microphone.
- Mute your audio unless you are speaking to prevent unintentional background noise.
- Try to leave the camera switched “ON” so you can make eye contact and the faculty can best “read the room”.
- Consider keeping devices on airplane mode to avoid any incoming calls.
Padlet is a free online tool that is best described as a free, easy to use, whiteboard software.. Padlet can be used by students and teachers to post notes and comments on a common page. The notes posted by teachers and students can contain links, videos, images, and document files.

A free account will be suitable for students.
While one actually does not need an account to view or add info to a teacher's Padlet, any comments added will appear as "anonymous" when posted. It will be helpful to sign up so teachers know who is posting.
