Important Update: Spring 2021 Semester

The message below was emailed to CCA students on October 12, 2020.

Dear CCA Students,

We are writing with an update on how we will structure our spring 2021 semester, and though there are many details to plan and finalize we want to share the news with you in a timely manner. These decisions were made with input across the college in accordance with regulations provided by the state and counties and with the utmost consideration of the health and safety of our students, staff, and faculty.

Given the ongoing threat the coronavirus pandemic poses, and the continued unknowns on when a vaccination will be widely available, we strongly believe that online delivery for a majority of our curriculum for the spring 2021 academic semester is the safest and most dependable decision. Conditions and regulations permitting, we will gradually be opening up the campus for more student use, giving students access to shops and studios as much as is safe and manageable with strict health protocols in place. On-campus housing and dining will also remain available.

Though it is disappointing to not return to in-person instruction, we feel strongly that we can manage some increased campus access, very minimal hybrid instruction, and a return to some semblance of campus making culture. Of course, all of these goals remain contingent on the local and state directives regarding safety, the capacity to assign and manage access to the needed facilities, and that the CCA community follows all rules and regulations as laid out in the CCA Return to Campus Plan.

We ask for your patience and collaboration as we begin some very time-sensitive work regarding how we are going to collectively operationalize our plans. We will communicate decisions and details comprehensively as they emerge.

Here are some details we can share with you now:

  • The spring 2021 semester will start one week later than originally planned, on Monday, January 25, 2021.
  • We will not have a spring break in order to maintain health and safety guidelines around quarantining.
  • On-campus housing will continue to be available for the entire semester. Students not currently living on campus will have the option to move in mid-January before courses begin, or in mid-March. Housing will also remain open through the summer.
  • Makers Cafe will remain open to accommodate residents with meal plans and essential staff. Cafe operations will shift to accommodate an increase in campus access.
