115th Commencement Frequently Asked Questions

What to Expect at this Year's Ceremony?

What is the best way to get the theater?

Please visit the Sydney Goldstein Theater website to learn more about how to get there.

We recognize that it can be a challenge driving in San Francisco and want to strongly recommend alternative ways to help ease your experience.

  • Consider using a parking app that will allow you to reserve a parking spot in advance if you are driving. Here are some recommendations:
  • Consider using a rideshare service and avoid the hassles of driving:

I'm a ticketed guest what should I expect at the theater?

  • Arrive early! We are opening the doors to the theater 1.5 hours early before the start of the ceremony to allow folks enough time to verify attendees' vaccination records. Once your vaccination status has been verified, you will receive a wristband to enter the theater.
    • TIP: Take a photo of your vaccination record on your phone (Here's an article on how to do so).
  • No food or beverages are allowed in the theater.
  • No balloons or flowers are allowed in the theater. Please do not bring them to the theater; please plan on giving them to your student at another time.

I lost my ticket what do I do?

Unfortunately, those without tickets will not be permitted into the theater. We will do our best to accommodate once ticketed guests have been seated.

With COVID-19 rising, how are we keeping the attendees safe?

In reimagining a safe commencement experience, we are doing the following:

  • We are verifying everyone's vaccination record and requiring all attendees to wear masks inside the theater and in designated outdoor spaces. Please bring your mask:
    • As you comply with the mask requirement, a well-fitting non-vented N95, KN95, or KF94 respirator is strongly recommended. A well-fitting surgical/procedural mask with a cloth mask worn over it to increase fit is also recommended. Cloth masks alone are no longer recommended.
  • There will be hand sanitizers available at the entrance.
  • During the ceremony, we are allowing only the speakers at the podium and the students as they cross the stage to remove their masks. Students will be saying their own name into the microphone as they cross their stage.
  • For those who are unable to attend in-person for health reasons, we have livestreams of the ceremonies. Additionally, on-demand videos will be made available for guests to view at their own convenience. Information about how to access the livestreams and on-demand videos will be emailed to the commencement class.

Livestreaming

Where do I find the link to view the livestream of the ceremony?

Please visit cca.edu/2022

  • For the Bachelor's Candidate Ceremony scheduled for 10:00 am PST, please click "Undergraduate Ceremony" tab.
  • For the Master's Candidate Ceremony scheduled for 3:00 pm PST, please click "Graduate Ceremony" tab.

What is the password to view the live stream?

Some students asked that their names not be published publicly, so the livestreams of the ceremonies are password protected to respect students' privacy. To join, please be sure to connect with a member of the commencement class for the password.

Vaccination Policy

Is there a vaccination policy to attend the event?

We will be following Sydney Goldstein Theater guidelines on vaccination mandates. Currently all participants and guests will need to show proof of vaccinations. Additionally, we will continue to follow CDC guidelines and local health directives.

Here is the theater's current vaccination policy (April 2022):

  • Proof of vaccination with a complete initial series is required for entry. This means completion of the two-dose regimen of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or one dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine must be administered two weeks or more in advance of the event. While not a requirement, a vaccine booster is strongly recommended to be administered at least one week prior to the event.
  • Children ages 5-12 must show proof of vaccination or a negative tests the day prior and the day of the event. Children under 5 will be allowed without either of these requirements.
  • Masks are also required. Policy subject to change.

Commencement Ceremonies (In Person)

Is commencement the same as graduation?

Graduation is the official completion of all of your academic degree requirements, which is when Student Records mails you a diploma. Commencement is the ceremony where you wear a tam, you cross the stage, and you and your guests celebrate. Commencement celebrates a combination of students who have recently graduated as well as students who are on track to graduate soon.

Is there more than one commencement ceremony?

Yes! There are two ceremonies: one for bachelor's degree candidates (e.g., BA, BFA, and BArch), and one for master's degree candidates (e.g., MA, MFA, MBA, MArch, MAAD, MDes). Both ceremonies are scheduled at different times on the same day.

How long are the ceremonies?

Typically, the Bachelor's Degree Candidates' Ceremony lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, and the Master's Degree Candidates' Ceremony lasts approximately 1 hour.

As a guest, what time do I have to be at the theater in time for the ceremony?

Based on current health and safety guidelines, doors are scheduled to open and guests are asked to arrive 1 hour and 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. Please check here for the specific times.

I have a guest who is mobility impaired and needs accessible seating. What do I do?

When completing the Commencement Ticket Request form, please complete the questions about accommodations for guests. Students who have guests who are in need of accommodations (e.g., accessible seating), please contact commencement@cca.edu with additional details about the type of accommodations being requested.

We will do our best to provide accessible seating to individuals with disabilities (for example: individuals who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices, who are unable to walk up flights of stairs, who have service animals, etc.) based on our limited availability.

Please note: The Sydney Goldstein Theater does not have elevator access to the upper level (Mezzanine). Those with tickets on the upper level will need to use the stairs to get to their seat.

Is there a place for my family to park a stroller at the venue during the ceremony?

Yes, there will be a stroller parking area at the venue. Please find a staff member for further instruction on the day of commencement.

Participating students will receive more information via email about when and where to pick up their tickets.

Can someone pick up my tickets for me?

If you're unable to pick up tickets during the designated pick-up times, you can have a friend pick them up for you. To do so, please email commencement@cca.edu with the name of your friend. Tickets will not be given to your friend unless we have received an email from you.

How do I get extra tickets?
