SF Campus Summer Construction Update - May 3, 2019
Posted May 3, 2019, 1:31 PM
CONSTRUCTION NOTICE
We have several construction-related activities happening this summer on the San Francisco campus:
- Work will continue on the new student housing facility at 188 Hooper Street; please see the construction schedule below for some key dates to be aware of.
- We must drill under the Backlot at 1111 8th Street—where the future Double Ground expansion of the main academic building would sit—for testing purposes; to accommodate this work, we will move the shipping containers on May 6 so drilling may take place May 7 through May 17.
- The bathrooms in 184 Hooper Street (GC 1) will close after May 10 to receive a much-needed overhaul; they will reopen for summer classes in July as all-gender restrooms with three stalls each.
- In the main academic building at 1111 8th Street, we will convert the Helzel Boardroom into two classrooms flanked by two small phone rooms in addition to upgrading some of the building’s mechanical systems; this work will start in earnest on May 28 (workers will be onsite the week before to inspect the building) and continue through the end of August.
WHAT TO EXPECT: All community members on the San Francisco campus can expect the continuation of existing site conditions around 188 Hooper Street (concrete and other large trucks lined up around and driving to/from the site; workers and equipment in the streets; changes to parking, sidewalks, and crosswalks; occasional street closures) as well as additional workers and equipment onsite at the various work areas (the Backlot, 184 Hooper Street, and 1111 8th Street) throughout the summer. Individuals working near any of the work areas can expect some noise and commotion during this time.
The Helzel Boardroom work will close the two flanking classrooms and the stretch of hallway directly in front of the room; while no other rooms will be closed during this time, the rooms closest to the construction zone can expect noise and additional foot traffic from workers accessing the area. Individuals needing access to the surrounding spaces will be able to travel via the following routes:
Helzel Boardroom construction impact: Paths of travel around the Boardroom during construction this summer are shown in green.
Other parts of the 1111 8th Street building may be subject to short-term (i.e. a day or two) closure throughout the summer as we upgrade the building’s mechanical systems. Classes have been scheduled with this in mind; additionally, we will work closely with the contractor to schedule work of this nature to minimize disruptions and will provide as much notice as possible via email and physical signage in the building.
Please be aware of your surroundings, read all posted signage, and/or follow directions from construction personnel.
CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE AND IMPACT
(all dates and times are subject to change):
January 2019: Started construction of the new student housing facility at 188 Hooper Street; street parking highlighted in red on the map below will no longer be available until the project is complete in 2020, while street parking in yellow will have varying degrees of availability over the course of the project.
May 6: Move the shipping containers on the Backlot to accommodate archaeological testing of the area starting May 7.
May 7: Drill under the Backlot where the new Double Ground building would sit for testing purposes. This work will continue through May 17.
May 13: Start renovating the bathrooms in 184 Hooper Street. This work will continue through June with the bathrooms opening in time for summer classes in July.
May 21: Workers onsite to prepare for the Helzel Boardroom work and start upgrading the building’s mechanical systems. Schedule and availability permitting, intermittent closures elsewhere in the 1111 8th Street building may start during this time.

This work will continue through August and finish in time for classes in September.
End of May into mid-June: There are two concrete pours for the 188 Hooper Street project that must be done from Carolina Street; around May 22 and again around June 13, Carolina Street will go down to one lane of through traffic with construction personnel directing vehicles on either end. This may also mean no street parking in front of 80 Carolina Street but access to the 80 Carolina Street parking lot will remain. Please be aware of your surroundings, read all posted signage, and/or follow directions from construction personnel.
Mid-June: Start raising the walls for the 188 Hooper Street project.
End of March/Early April 2020: Once the building exterior is complete and the scaffolding down, start work on the sidewalks surrounding 188 Hooper Street.
August 2020: Target date for student move-in to new student housing facility at 188 Hooper Street.
Parking around campus: Yellow areas may have temporary parking closures over the course of the 188 Hooper Street project, red areas are permanent parking closures (until the project is complete in 2020
