Event description
Over the last several years, Anthony Huberman has been working on Drum Listens to Heart, a three-part group exhibition that includes artists such as Raven Chacon, Milford Graves, NIC Kay, Rose Lowder, Lee Lozano, Guadalupe Maravilla, The Otolith Group, and Lucy Raven, among others.
In this lecture, he shares some of the references and ideas that informed his research and provide a broader context for the exhibition: percussive polyrhythms and percussive ensembles provide a framework for thinking about aesthetic, expressive, political, and curatorial forms more broadly.
Anthony Huberman (b. 1975, Geneva, Switzerland) is the Director and Chief Curator of the Wattis Institute, where he has curated exhibitions as well as year-long research programs with artists. Previous group exhibitions include Other Mechanisms (2018), Mechanisms (2017), 2014 Liverpool Biennial, For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn't there (2010), and Grey Flags (2006). Huberman was the Founding Director of The Artist's Institute at Hunter College in New York.
