Event description
MATRILINEAL: An exhibition on survivance, grief, memory, and the power of generational connection
MATRILINEAL centers the often-unspoken influence of mothers, grandmothers, and other maternal figures in shaping our creative and emotional lives. Through acts of making, these artists enact survivance, protecting and carrying forward the stories, knowledge, and cultural practices passed down to them. Their work draws on the generational labor of women and maternal figures often unrecognized or dismissed in traditional art histories and honors the ways knowledge, ritual, and resilience are passed down through touch, language, and the quiet inheritances of those invisible teachings that shape us and surface in our creative practices. The works embody the heart of MATRILINEALby tracing how memory, silence, and resilience are carried through maternal lines.
Artists Included: Grace Jin, Jasmine Narkita Wiley, Nishat Ahmed, Tricia Rainwater
Opening Reception: October 15th 6PM–8PM
MATRILINEAL is curated by Gabby Severson (MFA '26) and on view at PLAySPACE Gallery October 15 - October 31, 9AM–9PM daily.
