We invite the CCA community and friends of Print throughout the Bay Area to join us on September 9, 2026 at 5 PM.

Every Hamaguchi exhibition is a milestone for the artists who participate and the faculty who celebrate our students' success in the field of print, paper, and the book. From Yozo Hamaguchi’s original vision to celebrate the best in Printmaking at CCA, to today, the exhibition has evolved into a celebration of students who have found a home for their creative expression in Printmedia. This year will be the last exhibition of this kind. We thank everyone who has contributed to the Hamaguchi legacy at CCA over the past 31 years.

This exhibition features our collective Oakland Campus redwood slab relief carving. The redwood project began as a partnership between Printmedia and Furniture Programs to host acclaimed visiting artist Alison Saar in March 2026. Together we carved for over 20 hours, and for the exhibition we invite the CCA community to return to the redwood slabs and continue carving with faculty members Shanna Strauss, Anthea Black, and Kathy Lam, and MFA Hamaguchi Scholar Khadijah Morley.

About the Yozo Hamaguchi Printmedia Scholarship Award

The purpose of the Hamaguchi Scholarship Award and Award Exhibition is to foster excellence and dedication in the study and practice of Printmedia. The award is open to all majors whose work is engaged in the practice of printmaking and print media. Award recipients receive a scholarship of $5,000 and participate in an exhibition.

About Yozo Hamaguchi

In 1995, Yozo Hamaguchi and his wife, Minami Keiko, generously endowed a fund at CCA (then CCAC) for the purpose of granting annual awards to outstanding students in printmedia. Each an artist of international reputation, the Hamaguchis were born in Japan and lived in France for most of the years since the 1930s, arriving in San Francisco in 1982. After Mr. Hamaguchi retired in 1993, he gave his exquisite American-French Tool etching press to the Printmedia Program. Mr. Hamaguchi was a renowned master of color mezzotint printing, a form of intaglio printing that has been practiced by few since its invention in 1609. A few years after retiring, the Hamaguchis returned to Japan, where Mr. Hamaguchi died on December 25, 2000, at the age of 91.

About our 2026 Hamaguchi Guest Juror Shanna Strauss

Shanna Strauss is a Tanzanian-American mixed-media artist and printmaker currently living and working on Ohlone unceded territory (Oakland, CA). Raised in Tanzania before moving to Canada and later the United States. Her work explores oral tradition, family legacy, ancestral memory, and spirituality within African diasporic traditions, paying homage to the women in her family and the communities to which she is connected. Shanna holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California College of the Arts and a Master of Social Work from McGill University. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the de Young Museum, Art Toronto: Contemporary Art Fair, and Papier Contemporary Art Fair. Her work has been featured in Canadian Art, The Washington Post, and the San Francisco Standard.

Her work is part of private and public collections, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the North Dakota Museum of Art, the Euphrat Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, and San Francisco International Airport. She is the recipient of several awards, including the Prix Powerhouse from La Centrale Galerie, the Kala Art Institute Printmaking Fellowship, and the Denbo Publishing Fellowship at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center.
