Last updated on Mar 13, 2023

What are cookies?

Cookies are files made by sites you visit, which save your browsing information and enable certain functionalities, like keeping you signed in to websites or showing you relevant information.¹

Enabling certain cookies can enhance your workflow, saving you time and otherwise ensuring smooth functionality of sites you use frequently. Alternatively, blocking certain cookies may grant you peace of mind by better protecting your data from third parties.

Manage Cookies and Site Data Settings

For your browser of choice, follow the linked instructions to adjust cookie settings. Note that each browser has slightly different cookie options available:

You may block all third-party cookies to keep your browsing data as private as possible, but this will prevent certain functions, such as validating multiple logins with a single Duo authentication. Instead, you are generally recommended to clear your cookies regularly, only blocking individual sites from installing cookies.

The following is neither an exhaustive list nor a set of recommendations, but is merely meant for informational purposes so you can make the best choice for your own browser settings.

Enable Blocked Cookies While Browsing

Google Chrome

Even if you have applied cookie-blocking settings on Chrome, you'll still be able to make individual allowances when you visit sites that use cookies.

1) Click the eye icon on the browser URL/search bar to pull up a menu showing the current cookie settings (note that you may not see this icon if you have cookies enabled generally).

2) Click the Site not working? link to view a list of options for enabling cookies.

3) Click Allow cookies to enable all cookies on the site (including third-party cookies).

4) Alternatively, click Show cookies and other site data... to pull up a menu of options for enabling/disabling specific cookies.

  • This menu includes two tabs, each of which lists cookies by authoring site:
    • From the Allowed menu tab, select currently enabled cookies to Block or Remove
    • From the Blocked menu tab, select currently disabled cookies to Allow or Clear on Exit
  • Click Done to save changes.

5) You can re-block cookies by clicking on the eye icon, then click Block cookies from the resulting menu.

Mozilla Firefox

Regardless of your saved cookie preferences, you can view and adjust cookies and other tracking content from any webpage you visit:

1) Click the shield icon on the lefthand side of the browser URL/search bar.

2) From the resulting menu, select/deselect the Enhanced Tracking Protection toggle as desired.

  • When enhanced tracking protection is on, Firefox honors your saved cookie preferences.
  • When enhanced tracking protection is off, Firefox allows third-party cookies and tracking content.

3) Click Third-Party Cookies or Tracking Content from the menu to view individual items that are being allowed or blocked.

4) Select Protection Settings to view and/or adjust your saved cookie preferences.
