Low-Residency Program

We've designed the MFA in Comics curriculum just for you. This 60-unit, three-summer, low-residency program offers students the opportunity to study comics through seminars, workshops, and year-round professional mentoring.

If you wish to stay year-round in the San Francisco Bay Area, you can take additional courses to make it a full-time, full-residency program with 72 units.

Summer Sessions

Spend five weeks each summer in beautiful San Francisco working closely with our faculty in a tight-knit artistic community.

Each day of the Summer session begins with literary comics seminars in the morning, tools and techniques studios in the afternoon, and ends with intensive comics workshops focusing on every aspect of the creative process. There are also regular guest lectures and events to round out the Summer offerings.

CCA housing is available for the length of our summer session. Summer MFA in Comics housing is located in CCA's brand new Founders Residence Hall.

Fall/Spring Semesters

Between Summer sessions, graduate cartoonists are paired one-on-one with professional mentors for meetings every other week, as well as online workshops with our graduate comics faculty. This mentoring process is designed to support students as they complete their MFA in Comics thesis projects.

If students are staying in the San Francisco Bay Area, they have the opportunity to take additional comics classes during the Fall and Spring semesters that focus on specific topics, such as community journalism comics or short-form comics.
