Introduction to the Modern Arts

Intro to Modern Art

June 15-July 13 (Registration Deadline: Wednesday, June 14th, Noon, Pacific Time)

Course Description:

Modern art is a story; it follows the radical social and cultural changes that have occurred in human civilizations between the late 1700s and the present time.

This course investigates how what it means to be an artist has transformed alongside representative democracy, revolutions in science, the growth of global networks, the ascent of civil rights movements, and the advent of the digital age. We start from the premise that all art objects are like time capsules: through these things--these material traces--we investigate the conditions in which they were made, and learn something about the lives of the people who made them.

Students taking this course will explore the histories of painting, sculpture, architecture, design, photography, film, and video, including why some artistic stories appear more dominant than others, as well as the consequences of exclusion for non-dominant artists/cultures. Studying the stories that rise from modern art can give us new perspectives on ourselves as makers, citizens, and humans.

Faculty Bio: Elizabeth Mangini- Associate Professor and Chair of CCA's History of Art and Visual Culture program.

This hybrid online course is a combination of asynchronous and synchronous learning.

The asynchronous component of the course begins on Tuesday, June 13; the course ends on Sunday, July 16. There will also be the opportunity for live synchronous meetings with the professor and your fellow classmates via Zoom scheduled on two days per week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm Pacific Standard Time (California).
