Gemini for Education Student FAQ

Why is CCA providing access to these tools?

Providing access through CCA accounts ensures that all students can explore AI tools safely and securely. It helps level the playing field by giving everyone equal access to approved technologies with consistent privacy protections and without additional financial barriers.

Do these apps train on my data?

No. When you use Gemini, NotebookLM, or Zoom AI Companion while signed in with your CCA account, your information is protected and not used to train public AI systems.

If I upload my creative work (writing, images, or designs) do I lose control of my intellectual property?

No. You keep control and ownership of your creative work. These tools only process your content for the task you request (such as summarizing text or iterating on a visual design) and do not claim or store rights to your material.

Am I allowed to use these tools for coursework?

Always check with your instructor before using AI for classwork or creative projects. Each faculty member decides when AI use supports learning goals and when it may interfere with them. We encourage honest dialogue between students and faculty about the use of AI tools in the classroom. The use of AI in projects should always be noted. Please refer to CCA’s Responsive Use of Generative AI for more information.

If I create work using AI, is it my intellectual property?

It depends on how the work was made. Under current U.S. copyright law, content generated entirely by AI cannot be copyrighted because it lacks human authorship. However, if you make substantial creative decisions (for example, by writing prompts, selecting, editing, or combining AI outputs with your own original material) you can claim copyright for the portions that reflect your own creative contribution.

Do these AI tools have an environmental impact?

CCA recognizes that the growth of AI raises important sustainability questions, from energy use to material impact. We believe that artists and designers can be key contributors to solutions, applying the same creativity and systems thinking that have advanced sustainability in fine arts, architecture, design, and everyday life.

What if I want to opt out of using AI in my work at CCA?

With the exception of a few courses that focus specifically on exploring AI, you will not be required to use AI tools in your creative or academic work. CCA engages with AI in the classroom as one of many emerging tools shaping the world our students are entering. As an educational community, our goal is to help students understand new ideas, tools, and materials, including AI, so that they can make informed choices about their own creative processes. Ultimately, it remains up to you to decide which tools and materials you use in your work.
