FURNT-2160: Design/Make: Lighting + Metal
Course Description
This is one of four courses designed to support specialized craft-based skill development. Students learn metal fabrication techniques in order to design, develop and fabricate lighting and illuminated sculptural objects s. Off-campus studio visits and field trips to local metal fabricators will introduce the potential of outsourcing fabrication including casting, plasma cutting, CNC milling, spinning, plating, and powder coating.
Techniques covered in this course may include cutting, milling, stamping, and bending to soldering and welding. Students will learn to identify and understand applications for metal fasteners (e.g., screws, nuts and bolts, rivets, and pins) and stock materials (e.g., bar, sheet, mesh, pipe, and other extrusions). Students will also learn the basics of LEDs, 12V and 110V electrical systems, and UL regulations to support their lighting projects.
