Description:

Animation Workshops are a series of courses that teach essential skills about a specific topic within animation. Under the guidance of the instructor, students will engage in rigorous study about a specific subject matter. The goal of Animation Workshops is to produce work that illustrates the skills learned. These courses are open to all CCA students who have completed CORE D1 and 4D.In this course, students will explore experimental techniques in animation through hands-on assignments, screenings, discussions, and lectures. We will investigate animation as a form in relation to other experimental arts and discourses in contemporary visual culture. Through alternative methods of frame manipulation, experienced animators will develop new conceptual frameworks for their practice and artists from other disciplines can dip their toes into the medium of animation with a variety of materials and hybrid processes, including digital tools such as Dragonframe and After Effects. In class, students will watch various animated works by US and international artists who experiment with form, narrative, and representation in animation and analyze the way the materials and media of cinema create meaning and deliver narrative independent of linear character storytelling. The course will consist of a series of projects and a final class exhibition, all with specific instructions and deadlines for completion. Assignments and projects will range from animated films to installation art. At the end of the semester, students will have a group exhibition showing all of the projects done for this class.
