Description:
This second studio in the Undergraduate Architecture studio sequence introduces students to an understanding of the relationships between architectural form, space, and the many meanings of ‘context’ and ‘environment’. Context does not simply mean the physical features of a 'site', but rather entails social, political, and environmental phenomena. Studio 2 explores architecture's interactions with these phenomena, and contemporary conceptions of environment and ecology, as subjects of architectural discourse, cultural reflection, and experimentation. Design research will explore tying the shifting conceptions of environment to architectural form, expression, materials choices and critical intent.Travel requirement: This course includes a required travel component. Students are expected to join a field trip to the Marin Headlands, overnight from Saturday, January 27, noon, to Sunday, January 28, 3pm. If absolutely necessary, students with previous engagements or other unavoidable obligations will be excused, but it is understood that every effort should be made to attend. In order to participate in the field trip, students must complete the CCA Student Travel Emergency Contact Information and Release Form, which will be shared with them in advance of the trip. Students should anticipate spending no more than $30 for this trip.
