Prefabrication in construction has a long history, but up to now prefabricated architecture has not been able to reach the efficiency and success that other prefabricated products, such as cars, have achieved. This seminar sets out to investigate how prefabrication could help to change our approach to architecture both from a design as well as from a technological perspective. We will start out by researching the history and the different typologies of prefabricated architecture to then investigate how new integrated approaches and technologies could change the way prefabricated architecture is being manufactured, assembled and ultimately used. Through a combination of lectures and integrated design investigations, that aim to expand the area of research to include structure, mep and other technological aspects, students will gain a deeper understanding of the incorporation of various technologies and explore new approaches to the design of prefabricated systems.
