Description:
Course Description:
This intermediate level workshop focuses on developing higher proficiency in technical areas of ceramics and continuing critical analysis. The studio work is paired with appropriate lectures, demonstrations and field trips.
Section Description:
Pen Pals explores how we can harness craftsmanship and technology to span distances. Students will develop concepts related to their practices and environmental, political, and cultural conversations in order to select pen pals. Students will create both handcrafted and digital object letters using handbuilding techniques for clay, a decal printer, and a 3D printer. Outside techniques and materials based on majors, such as wood, textiles, and photography, can also be incorporated into the work. Readings, discussions, and guest speakers will elaborate on letter writing and object-based correspondence. One of the three assignments will align students with pen pals from other art colleges to exchange 3D model files that the receiver will print. What kind of letters will you create to span the distance?
