Person to Person People to People What do trees, voting, food and acupuncture have in common? How can we expand our aesthetic frameworks to include people, social processes, and interactive strategies in our art practice? In Community Practice Studio 1+2: Person to Person People to People, we will explore the Oakland campus as a site of historical reenactment and social engagement, join forces with MFA students in getting out the vote in key California Central Valley Districts 21 and 10-Visalia and Modesto respectively-in unprecedented mid-term elections of November 2018, and explore investigative journalism and the podcast as a creative form and documentation tool for site and community-based work. We will discuss best practices in community and participatory engagement considering context, social forms and place. Best practices include participatory learning, ethics, cultural sensitivity and themes arising from present conditions of diverse communities. Regular guest lecturers and class trips expose students to artists and scholars working in the field.
