Description:
How do artists interact with society, expanding their practice to shape civic life through social and political engagement, collaboration and participatory activities? Using a balance of historical readings and contemporary models for developing a community and socially engaged practice, we will look at the way artists work in and with communities, public space, address social and environmental justice, appropriate social forms (such as the store, school and restaurant) to generate new forms of art and ways of being in the world. Through field-based research, meetings with visiting artists, and written and oral research, meetings with visiting artists, and written and oral presentations we will explore the potentials of artistic practice in contemporary social realms.
