Description:
This course focuses on gaining advanced skills in the deceptively simple act of shaping and sculpting wood. Working across the spectrum from functional furniture to sculpture, students will strengthen the relationship between technique and concept, tooling and intention, to create sculptural form in wood. Utilizing hand tools, handheld tooling and machinery students will learn methodical approaches to transform this natural material into their own unique projects.Skills and techniques will be focused on safe and effective use of tooling available in the Furniture Studio. While shaping and sculpting are the focus of the course, basic woodworking techniques including joinery, sanding and finishing will be covered as well. Students should have a basic comfort level working in shop environments. Some previous experience working with wood preferred but not required.
