Description:
A semester-long mash-up of textiles and furniture, students will work with fundamental processes of weaving and joinery towards creating unique functional and sculptural objects. While basic upholstery techniques will be covered, the driving concept behind the course is the interplay between frame and weave, rigid and flexible, soft and hard, comfort and discomfort. Materials may include and are not limited to wool, yarn, rattan, Danish cord, solid wood.Visiting Artist Marina Contro and Instructor Katherine Lam will guide students through a semester of exploration in both the Furniture and Textiles Studios, playing with and pushing forward ideas about the shared strengths of woven materials and the linear strengths of wood.Upper Level Craft workshops serve Junior or Senior students interested in applying their skills and knowledge in interdisciplinary studio settings. These courses have an emphasis on project learning, sustainability, global perspectives and entrepreneurial opportunities. There will readings, research or supplemental activities that help students contextualize their creative production within broad Craft dialogues. Please see individual sections for specific descriptions.
