This class provides intermediate and advanced students from all fine arts disciplines a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue within a rigorous and supportive critique process. As students continue to evolve their own body of work in the medium of their choice, this class engages them in discussion with artists who work in diverse media, and helps them to develop a shared critical analysis of their art practices. Students work on refining their conceptual approaches and presentation skills, and develop a portfolio of images and a written artist statement. This course includes critiques, guest artists, field trips, studio visits, and gallery visits.Section Description:Students wishing to register for this course need to first obtain instructor approval by emailing the instructor (instructor emails are listed with a more detailed program description in portal: cca.edu/abroad). Once a student is approved, registration must be done in person at the Student Records Office on either campus.Open to visual artists and curatorial practice students, this class — a collaboration between CCA and the 37-year old nonprofit art space Art in General — provides students both 24-7 access to Art in General’s residency studio and the opportunity to mount an exhibition in their gallery space in the DUMBO district of Brooklyn.
 
The course introduces students to artists and art world professionals in New York City, through studio visits and meetings, in which they learn firsthand about the current New York art scene. The residency studio at Art in General is available to students for use as a studio space on a daily basis, and is also used as the main meeting space throughout the class. Art in General’s prominent gallery space, in the same building, also hosts the culminating two-day group exhibition of CCA student artwork, and an opening reception connects students in the course with CCA alumni living in New York. Students work with Christina Linden, CCA Curatorial Practice students who enroll in the course, and Art in General to plan the exhibition, including press materials, promotion, installation, and opening reception.
 
Studio visits to local artists, who live and work in the area, generate group discussions. The class meets with art professionals including curators, gallerists, and residency directors to learn about the professional workings of the New York art world. Students explore different types of exhibition spaces, such as commercial and artist-run galleries, and visit galleries and museums, both as a group and individually. An in-depth journal/sketchbook component is required for the class.
