Description:
In this moment that we are alive, Death is all around us. Yet many of us have inherited a death-phobic orientation to Life that undermines the ability to be present with mortality. In this course students reflect upon the systems that define their relationship with Death and the Dead themselves. Tracing significant shifts in cultural narratives regarding the post-mortem body and the care of the soul we will investigate how Death is rendered (or not) through language, labor, and spectacle at the threshold of private grief and public mourning.
