Description:

Designers stand on the shoulders of giants. Innovation by definition requires knowledge of the past. Design history also provides a rich storehouse of forms, styles, ideas, and strategies from which to learn and borrow in contemporary work. Particular focus is on graphic design, interaction design, product design and the places where they met, overlap, or intersect. Readings can range from academic writing to journalism, the popular press, blogs and more personal modes of writing. The class may also include films and guest speakers in order to provide an expansive, global view of design practice and culture. Through their own critical writing, students will explore specific objects and ideas in design history.
