Description:
This research, discussion, and writing-based course will explore monuments, memorials, "sites of conscience" and other projects that reference historical memory. How and why canmonuments be designed, un-designed, or redesigned? Taking an expansive view of monuments, from official installations to ephemeral interventions to more conceptual, speculative, and digital practices, we will examine contemporary and historical controversies over monuments in relation to nationalism and identity, conflict and trauma, and heritage and historiography in global contexts.
