Description:
This class explores the conceptual matrix of Georges Bataille’s notion of formlessness as it relates to natural and aesthetic objects and to experiences at both the individual and social levels. While much art and design involves a search for form, all form is ultimately haunted by the problem of formlessness. Complexity, contradiction, ambiguity, entropy, luxury, and waste will be key terms in our discussion of the dialectics of form, formless, and, in Kenya Hara’s term, ex-formation.
