Description:
Making is the foundation of a designer’s practice. This course will examine materials in the making process applied through research, writing and practical methodologies to engage in a variety of history and contemporary, critical thinking and cultural perspectives. Adapting a multidisciplinary approach from philosophy, science, technology, anthropology, sociology, education, art and craft studies will explore the foundations of materials as multidimensional objects of inquiry for better design. Experimenting materials has evolved as a significant part of the Maker Movement. The course will bridge materials from crafts, arts to design and the history of experimentation starting from the kitchen, workshop, laboratory to industry to discuss topics of materiality, sourcing and sustainability. This course will include studio labs and field trips.
