Description:
In this class, students will explore a conceptual robot design through the lens of research-through-design practice. A robot takes an interesting position across the worlds of fiction and technology. In science fiction, it appears as a highly anthropomorphized machine that challenges a notion of humanity. In reality, it is commercialized to help us do chores and repetitive labor as an automated device and system. In the class, we will look into the history and origin of robots in a broad spectrum and examine the context of technological advancement from a critical perspective. Based on the understanding, we will explore an alternative form, function, and interaction of robots using visual and tangible ways of design. In this process, the research-through-design method will guide students to investigate the topic with an open-ended question and hands-on design practice.
