Description:
Design for the real world! Public Interactives explores how designers create engaging digital experiences for communal spaces—installations, exhibits, and pop-up events that spark curiosity and invite participation. From hands-on museums and street festivals to storefronts and civic plazas, students design “walk-up-and-use” experiences that attract attention, communicate swiftly, and reward playful exploration.Public Interactives require diverse skills, so students will draw on their strengths and learn from their peers—graphic designers craft motion and storytelling at scale; interaction designers build feedback systems and dynamic flow; industrial designers shape form, durability, and human factors. Projects may integrate physical computing, sensors, light, sound, and dynamic, responsive media to enliven and transform everyday environments.Individually and in teams, you'll propose and prototype pieces, test them with real audiences, and iterate based on feedback—learning to shepherd projects from initial concept through installation. By the end, you'll have the skills to imagine and create public-facing interactive installations that connect, delight, inform, and inspire passersby.
