Description:
This class will consider type, text, and image, as well as type and text as image. With the rise of photobook and Instagram culture, we will look at caption, sequence, meaning and ambiguity in this new social environment. The class will stress strategies for crafting text and letterforms to be photographed, printed, and transmitted. We will look at how the materiality of the original form translates into new possibilities through photo-based processes. In addition, there will be ample opportunity for time-based and interactive solutions which can take advantage of the online nature of the class, paying careful attention to how each mode affects the reception, clarity and interpretation of meaning. Can the designer/artist work against the intentionally rapid intake of imagery by exploring duration and attention? How does the implied stability of print--- or instability of the digital --- change meaning and value? These are among the questions that contemporary design and photo-based practice are tackling. I hope this class can make a contribution to the ongoing dialogue.
