Description:

Step into the expanding world of immersive storytelling. In this studio course, you’ll explore the creative and technical frontiers of Virtual Reality (VR), spherical, and 360º video—mediums that invite audiences not just to watch, but to enter the story. What does it mean to craft an environment that blurs the line between spectator and participant? Through guided inquiry and hands-on experimentation, you’ll examine how these evolving systems—VR, 360º, and other spatial forms—differ, overlap, and reshape our understanding of cinema.Class discussions will trace the historical roots and contemporary evolution of immersive media, considering both its aesthetic possibilities and its ethical implications. You’ll analyze pioneering works, debate the politics of representation within immersive space, and explore how presence, perspective, and empathy operate when the viewer becomes part of the frame. On the practical side, you’ll learn to work with cutting edge tools: spherical and 360º cameras, mobile VR platforms, and custom capture rigs. Collaborative and individual projects will challenge you to design original immersive pieces that engage, disorient, and envelop the viewer. Expect to work across disciplines—filmmaking, sound design, installation, and performance—as you refine your personal approach to immersive storytelling. Visiting artists and field recording excursions will offer realworld insight into how this rapidly changing field is redefining the moving image. By the end of the course, you’ll understand not only how to make immersive work, but how to think immersively— questioning the boundaries between maker and audience, and pushing film and media into new dimensions.Film Production 2 continues to build the skills explored in Film Production 1, developing a very solid technical knowledge base for each student. The course evolves through hands-on exercises, studio and field practice. Students will continue to increase their expertise and comfort with both industry standard and alternative methodologies for studio and field production of moving images and sound for cinema.
