Description:

Thesis Development Seminar guides students through the research, development, and pre-production phases of their MFA thesis film project, including ideation, concept development, treatment/script writing, effective project planning, and individual project problem solving. The first part of the seminar is an exploration of ideas, themes, and approaches intended to open up thinking about the thesis film project; the second part of the semester focuses on the specific thesis project. Students will execute a series of production and writing exercises designed to aid in the development of thesis concepts and ideas. Students will be encouraged to think broadly about film as a medium, considering narrative, non-narrative, non-fiction, and hybrid modes of making along with different contexts for exhibition. The goal is to help each student conceive and create a thesis project that speaks to them as an artist, further developing their own unique filmmaking voice. The course will be a hybrid of online course work, lectures, and film viewings, both synchronous and asynchronous, as well as in-person meetings. Students will complete conceptual production exercises, readings, and writing assignments. The culminating activity of the course will be the thesis film project proposal, to include treatment/script, budget, and production plan. Students will continue with production and postproduction of the thesis film project during the Spring semester. The finished film will result in the completion of the MFA requirements. Hybrid course sections will be delivered both online and in-person. Required online synchronous meeting times are listed as the meeting pattern for this course section. Additional course components will be delivered asynchronously or in-person as outlined in the syllabus.
