Description:
Fundamentals of Directing is designed to teach the filmmaking process from the perspective of the director. This course exposes students to different directing and storytelling theories and approaches through hands-on, project-based experience. Students will explore the director’s use of mise-en-scene, approaches to planning films with an eye to subjectivity and POV, staging action, research methods, and collaboration with the writer, cinematographer, production designer, editor, and composer. This course will include synchronous (zoom) lectures and project critique, asynchronous lectures, viewing, reading, projects and assignments, as well as scheduled, in-person staging exercises in the CCA soundstage. Although the primary focus of this class is the fundamentals of mise-en-scene, staging action (coverage & sequence shots), and running a set, there will be introductory lessons on work with actors, including script analysis and rehearsal technique.Hybrid course sections will be delivered both online and in-person. Required online synchronous meeting times are listed as the meeting pattern for this course section. Additional course components will be delivered asynchronously or in-person as outlined in the syllabus.
