Description:
In tumultuous times, there is a human hunger for a witness. How can a filmmaker take up a position to tell the contemporary stories of unimaginable dilemmas? How can a filmmaker find humor, hope, and intimacy when the world is upside down and inside out? In this final semester of Non-fiction Film at the California College of the Arts, we approach filmmaking from a poignant platform. Through the production of several nonfiction projects, required viewings of globally relevant short and feature-length films, readings, and discussion, this course invites students to explore the role and impact of nonfiction film at different historical moments with the aim of developing critical media producers for our contemporary world. How has the genre of nonfiction film changed? How can you change it? How can new filmmakers dive into this critical arena from different vantage points? What is the impact of social media on nonfiction methodologies? Concepts explored will include artificial intelligence, truth versus authority, an author's voice, mode and tone, interviews and testimonies, macrocosmic and personal explorations, performance and reenactment, essay films, interactive documentary, and uses of archival and found footage, among others.
