Description:
The primary goal of this course is to introduce and refine the practical knowledge of, and competency within, the field of contemporary public and social art. Designed to engage the cultural, intellectual, and technical breadth necessary for social practice work, each workshop takes a field-based approach centered on a series of thematic frameworks. In the Spring 2017 workshop we will focus on questions of contextual awareness, situated practice and social form. Students will develop their work in projects with two specific artist-centered organizations that have long histories of public engagement. The class offers opportunities to conduct research and create work in both individual and collective modes. Firstly, the class will travel to Tijuana for a 3-4 day investigative trip, to work with Raul Cardenas Osuna and his collective project Torolab (http://galeriaomr.com/torolab-2/). Secondly, over the course of the semester, we will be developing a project that will be presented publicly at Adobe Books for the month of May. The class will come up with the content and form for this project in conversation with the director, Eliza Gregory. The class will include some reading and discussion pertinent to the emergent projects. Some notes: Students will need a valid passport or visa to travel to Mexico. The trip will be made over a long weekend. Students should also be prepared to be around during the month of May for the project with Adobe Books. Any event based components can be tailored to fit personal schedules. We will take some weeks off from weekly classes to allow for engagement in the projects.
