Description:
A photographer’s studio practice is multifaceted — such is this course. We will meet weekly either in-person to visit institutions and studios or on Zoom, to discuss what it takes to balance an art practice, professional life, and cultivate a supportive creative community. This course will serve as an introduction to the incredibly vibrant photography world that exists in the Bay Area (and beyond). There will be various talks with people from institutions such as SFMoMA, Pier 24, fine art galleries, as well as virtual studio visits with artists and publishers from across the country. Along the way we will also discuss the world of photobooks and publishing, photographic literacy as sequential language, print materials, and production. This is not a tech heavy course, but will incorporate some technical workshops to address current trends of production for exhibition and publishing. There will be pre-recorded technical demos distributed to the class for these workshops. There will be approximately 5 hours of outside reading assigned, five 500-word essays to be written, as well as approx. 10 hours of outside digital file prep to be done for this course.
Hybrid course sections will be delivered both online and in-person. Required online synchronous meeting times are listed as the meeting pattern for this course section. Additional course components will be delivered asynchronously or in-person as outlined in the syllabus.
