Description:
There’s more to writing than the academic essay. This class is for visual artists who want to explore all the other fun stuff that writing can offer. This is a hands-on exploratory seminar. No particular skill or background in writing is required. If you have a resistance to or fear of writing, this is the class for you. Expect to experiment and take risks. Readings will be cross genre and often unruly, with a particular focus on image-text pieces. Readings will frequently be used to introduce writing prompts. In this class
we will consider language as a material to use in your practice, and writing as a tool to expand your options.Fine Arts Seminars are intended to broaden and clarify students' perspective on contemporary art practice. Each semester these seminars shift in focus and subject matter. Seminars may concentrate on art from the perspectives of art history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and so forth, or may take the form of a discipline-based critique focusing on the history, theory, and practice of painting, sculpture, and photography, among others.
