The sequence of Exhibitions 1 and Exhibitions 2 along with Thesis 1 and Thesis 2, comprises the required coursework in which students develop their capstone written thesis and final exhibition projects. These courses encompass both researching and writing the thesis and the preparation and presentation of work in the MFA final exhibition. All second year MFA students are required to take Thesis and Exhibitions in the two course sequence of Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. In Thesis, students complete a written thesis––a piece of writing that brings together the myriad facets of each artist’s practice, critical inquiry, personal exploration, to produce a substantial and sustained piece of writing. In Exhibitions students engage in exhibition making and investigate related issues of professional practice in contemporary art. The primary element of the course is the planning and installation of the students' final MFA exhibition in a series of curated shows opening in April 2025. The course is designed to develop experience in the professional presentation of art work, explore exhibition formats, and support the refinement of each student’s voice in presenting their work. Critique and assessment of the work to be presented will continue throughout the year. The Final Review required for graduation will take place during the MFA exhibition. Exhibitions 1 + 2 integrates professional development, critique, conversations with artists, curators, gallerists, and educators who provide behind-the-scenes insights and strategies for a sustaining a life-long artistic practice after graduate school.
