Description:
Learn the essentials of furniture design and woodworking within a collaborative community of makers. This course offers you the opportunity to develop your own designs while building a strong foundation of craft-based skills in the Furniture Studio. Guided by experienced faculty and shop staff, you will explore the design and fabrication processes of functional furniture, emphasizing problem-solving, precision, and the creative practice of object-making. Key woodworking techniques covered include milling, joinery, gluing, and finishing. Additionally, you will learn vital design skills such as model-making and technical drawing to enhance the success of your projects. Completion of this course is a prerequisite for most advanced furniture classes and is required to access the Machine Room.
Instructor Adrien Segal is an artist based in Oakland, CA. Her work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums, and is published in several books and academic journals. She has been an Artist in Residence at the Bunnell Street Art Center (Alaska), the Pier 9 Workshop (San Francisco), Bullseye Glass (Emeryville), the Schmidt Ocean Institute, and at Benchspace Cork (Ireland). She has also been the Wornick Distinguished Visiting Professor at California College of the Arts, where she received a BFA in Furniture Design.
