Description:
An introduction to the fundamentals of furniture design and woodworking. Students explore materiality and the structural possibilities of wood as a primary material through processes such as joinery, shaping, carving, and finishing. The learning of craft-based skills emphasizes precision and problem solving, as well as understanding the pragmatic and creative implications of natural materials. Design process and idea development engages research, analog and digital drawing tools, and model making to communicate ideas and problem solve. The use and maintenance of traditional hand tools, hand power tools, and woodworking machinery are core to technique-based learning. This course is a prerequisite for all advanced Furniture studio courses and is required for access to the Machine Room.
