Description:
This class will focus on the intersection between the craft of instrument making, the science of acoustics, and the aesthetics of product development. We will explore a wide variety of potential product applications, targeted around the theme of acoustic electronics. Through the course of the semester students will learn the fundamentals of acoustic theory, electronic wiring, and fabrication techniques, specific to creating their own fully functioning sound objects. While this class will have a heavy technique focus, we will balance this with theory of acoustics, and the design development of products of exceptional craft. There will be special attention paid to experimentation and iterative development of our concepts. We will explore this through functional prototypes of the mechanics, as well as presentation and refinement of the aesthetic direction we are presenting in our forms. Students should have a foundation in building skills. Model Making, Intro to Furniture, or equivalents are required but please inquire if you have questions!Corey Jones is an Associate Professor in Industrial Design, and has been teaching at California College of the Arts since 2009 across the Industrial Design, Furniture Design, Glass and MFA Design programs. With an extensive background in fabrication and media processes, Corey is a multidisciplinary designer and brings the ethos of “always make” to the courses that he teaches.
