This class will focus on the design and construction of an original chair while considering the conceptual and expressive iconography of chairs throughout time. We will touch upon many of the unique methods of construction used in frame, volumetric, and planar seating. Line, proportion, ergonomics, materials and concept are all criteria for appreciating chairs as functional objects, as statements of design and as works of art. Students will be expected to develop conceptual ideas and the strategies to express them through these means.
