Description:
This course is one of four courses to further develop skills in both the design and fabrication of furniture and related objects. In this course students consider the cabinet both as a furniture object and a concept while exploring technical woodworking skills specific to the box form. Students will use the fundamental skills learned in Introduction to Furniture to gain a deeper understanding of design intention, advanced hand tool techniques and the furniture box form as a cultural signifier. Processes covered in the course include carcase and frame and panel construction, box joinery, dovetails, finger joints and door and drawer construction. Material choices, basic wood science and sustainability will be explored. Hardware will be studied and introduced including hinges, pulls and latches. Students are expected to acquire a range of hand tools with a focus on advanced use and maintenance of chisels, handplanes, saws, measuring and marking tools. The first project will be the design and construction of a tool box. The second project will expand on these skills and students will design and build a small cabinet with personal design and concepts while engaging a deeper understanding of the history and technology of woodworking.
