Description:
Together we will consider the cabinet as both a functional and conceptual object. Humans have designed containers to hold and preserve things of value since antiquity. These objects are revealed and concealed by the original ideas of the designer and maker. We'll explore what containment and display mean while bringing to life a unique object to contain another object or concept. This is one of four Furniture program courses focused on specialized craft-based skill development for designing and fabricating furniture and other sculptural objects. Building on the skills learned in Furniture Fundamentals (FURNT-1000) students will gain a deeper understanding of the design process and advanced woodworking skills. Techniques covered in this course include box and drawer construction, specialized joinery techniques and the use of hardware such as hinges, pulls, and latches. Students will advance their skills in both hand skills and machine fabrication.
