The course offers first-hand experience of the working processes, concepts and professional lives of some of the world's leading artists and designers pursuing engaging approaches to materiality, process, the histories of making and to maintaining a sustainable practice. In Fall 2018, the Wornick Distinguished Visiting Professorship will be shared by two emerging artists. Local original Julian Watts and Madison-based Sylvie Rosenthal. Both engage traditional and contemporary building and carving techniques in their work. Born, raised, and based in San Francisco, Julian Watts is an artist and woodworker with a BFA in Sculpture and a Certificate in Folklore Studies from the University of Oregon. Using traditional wood carving and furniture making techniques, he explores the space between sculptural form and functional object. https://www.boilerroomsf.com/pages/julian-wattsSyl vie Rosenthal has gained recognition for her intricate and detail-oriented furniture and sculpture, contraptions and art objects, that are infused with humor and steeped in the impossible.
