Atelier for Fall 2023 offers students a unique experience. This course will focus on a place-based inquiry into the environmental implications of sourcing and utilization of wood. Working with Wornick Visiting Professor Evan Shively – sculptor, former chef, and founder of local sawmill Arborica – students will learn firsthand the considerations and processes of reclaiming fallen trees local to Northern California. Through research, lectures, group work, and off-site visits students will develop projects that address the value systems and ethics of material sourcing and its effects – from their perspectives as designers, artists, and creative practitioners.Outcomes from this course will be exhibited at a virtual symposium focused on sustainability, co-organized by the Museum for Art in Wood (Spring 2024), with generous sponsorship from the nonprofit organization GreenWood and the John & Robyn Horn Foundation.Please note there will be up to 3 required off site field trips.
