Description:

This is a course for artists of any medium who are engaging in research as part of the conceptual build of their work or are interested in working this way. This class will look at various forms research can take, with particular concern with the place. From digital archives to physical libraries to the shoreline or an open field, we will investigate what constitutes research both of the mind and in the body. This will take the shape of readings, assignments, and field trips to help students choose an area (or areas) of interest, develop research in that area, and then produce various works throughout the semester building on that knowledge. This course is a perfect fit for self-directed artists who are well-versed in working and developing ideas independently or wish to work this way.
