Description:

This course couples the natural world with the presence of the human. The relationship is complicated, including climate impacts, and integration of nature into the built environment. Students will visit gardens, creeks, academy of science museum, parks, the zoo, and the ocean. Where is the edge of the wild? and how does it coexist? How did we study nature? What is the tyranny of the sublime and the picturesque? The very things we covet are those that contribute to climate problems. How can we celebrate the sublime without harm? Discussion and lectures about art and artists who are working in the climate conscious space, as well as studio visits. Potential speakers and studio visits include: Dominick Porras, Alicia Escott, Liz Walsh, Mark Brestvancampen, Ohlone land stewards, Golden Gate national park rangers, etc. Field studies will lead to larger scale studio works. Discussion of environmental impacts of paint, and ways to curb our material uses will be included. Mixed media painting techniques will be explored and reinforced through demonstrations and experiments such as sun prints, snap line drawings, egg tempera, etc.For students who are highly motivated and dedicated to their work, upper-level Painting/Drawing Workshops continue to advance ideas from earlier workshops with a deeper emphasis on the development a personal voice through individual projects and critical thinking, both in and out of the studio. Interdisciplinarity, experimentation and collaboration are encouraged. Lectures, readings, presentations, and guest critiques provide additional context for this research.
