Description:
COURSE DESCRIPTIONCreative Community: Lit & Culture in the Bay Area takes an experiential approach to introducing students to the diverse, innovative, vibrant literary culture of the Bay Area, past, present and future. Through rigorous interrogation of the histories of nonfiction forms, craft-based writing exercises and weekly excursions, participants will come to understand local resources and organizations, as well as the role of the essay as powerful narrative tool. Texts will range from classic interviews and essays about the city, to murals, maps and performance. The goals of this seminar include providing participants with opportunities to develop literary communities within both the program and the Bay Area, participating in activities to locate themselves within the context of local writing and art scenes, and offering strategies for entering the larger, global creative community.
