Description:

Course Description: This course offers comprehensive instruction on all aspects of shaping, surface drawing, sculpting and forming glass in its cold non-molten state. Emphasis is on developing anunderstanding of coldworking techniques and skills through set projects and hands-on practice. Experimentation based on contemporary interpretations oftraditional coldworking techniques is encouraged. These techniques include: grinding, engraving, carving, sawing, cutting, drilling, sandblasting, laminating, and construction. During the second half of the semester, students will follow an independent study of their own design in conjunction with their instructor on a tutorial basis. Successful completion of Coldworking is a prerequisite for entry into Glass 3. Additional materials fee will be charged.Section Description:Glass is a material of paradoxes. It is liquid frozen in motion. It conducts light, insulates electricity and magnifies and distorts vision. We combine light and shadow with glass to peer into the darkness, to discover the structure of reality and to project our dreams. This hybrid studio/lab class uses the combination of glass, water and light to create projections, distortions, and magnifications. Students will research examples of lens and mirror based technology to create objects and images that reflect, distort, magnify and project, while simultaneously considering the layered meanings associated with these concepts. Students will use glass casting, and cold working in combination with film/photo skills to respond to prompts. There will be two field trips, one to Chabot Space Center to look at telescopes and spend an evening star gazing. The second field trip will be to the exploratorium to look at optics.Students will exhibit their work on campus at the end of the semester.
